From Flip Phones to Fresh Starts

CEO CORNER EDITION: by Frank Ye, CEO

Let’s rewind to the early 2000s, a time of CDMA flip phones, dial-up, and burning CDs. As a new Canadian, I was eager to begin working for a Canadian telecom giant: Nortel Networks. The company was at the forefront of technological innovation, shaping the future of telecommunications, and I was proud to be part of the team.

Unfortunately, the feeling didn’t last. Just nine years later, in 2009, Nortel filed for bankruptcy protection, making it the largest corporate failure in Canadian history. I saw firsthand how quickly the tides can turn in tech - how innovation without foresight can lead to downfall. But as the telecom empire crumbled and I watched the offices around me grow quiet, I found something truly unexpected: inspiration.

As a child, I was always drawn to the idea of building something of my own, not just a business, but a vision, a team, a purpose. Growing up in China taught me the value of hard work–my father taught me the necessity of innovation in a constantly evolving world. When I arrived here, Canada taught me that success isn’t just about individual effort, but about the strength of the people around you -the ones who believe in your potential even before you’ve proven it.

Sometimes, starting from scratch isn’t the end of the story... it’s where the real innovation begins.

When my wife and I immigrated from Shanghai, we brought what most newcomers do: hope, drive and not much else. As we navigated our new lives, we discovered that Canada had more than opportunity to offer - it provided community. Neighbours who smiled, customers who gave us a chance, and coworkers who showed patience. All of those moments added up and shaped how I approach business to this day.

One memory I often think about happened just a few months after we arrived in Canada. It was our first winter, and our car had gotten stuck in the snow. With my wife in the driver's seat, I tried to push the car free. A couple approached and kindly asked if I needed help, but because we were still new to the country and I was feeling uncertain, I replied with a quick, “No, thank you.” They nodded and drove off.

But several minutes later, they came back. “Let us help you,” they said.

This time, I accepted, and with their help, we were able to free the car, something I couldn’t have done on my own. That simple act of kindness taught me something important: in Canada, people care. And that spirit of helping one another has inspired me ever since.

After the collapse of Nortel, my childhood dream began to feel urgent, and while I was gaining so much, I realized we were losing something critical in Canada - the ecosystem for telecom and wireless technology. Nortel had been the backbone of innovation in that space, and without it, a gap was forming.

I wanted to bring something back to the country that had given me so much - a business that could contribute to the next wave of Canadian innovation.

Markets shift. Companies rise and fall. But people make it all matter.

In 2011, as networks grew more complex and data demands surged, Acentury was born. We quickly established ourselves as a trusted wireless test engineering solutions provider for large telecom operators in Canada, providing the tools, insights, and methodologies needed to accurately assess and optimize wireless network performance. Our team continued to push wireless technology forward.

Within the first two years, we took our first big leap by launching our own line of passive network components for wireless infrastructure systems. These behind-the-scenes components play a critical role in enabling wireless infrastructure by managing signal flow with precision, much like how plumbing directs water exactly where it needs to go. After several years of working closely with telecommunication providers across Canada and expanding our reach into the U.S. market, we reached a turning point.

By then, the wireless industry was gearing up for a major leap forward with 4G and 5G on the horizon. As telecom labs started to feel the pressure of this rapid innovation, we made the strategic decision to launch a software division to help operators navigate the complexity of next-gen wireless networks.

Building the future of wireless, one line of code at a time.

With years of practical RF engineering expertise as a foundation, we developed orchestration and software automation tools designed to streamline testing environments and remove the bottlenecks that hold innovation back. As a result, we helped reduce operating costs, accelerate time-to-market, enable more advanced testing, and maximize equipment ROI. Essentially, our combined software and hardware solutions turned lab testing from a routine necessity into a strategic advantage.

In 2018, we launched SynMatrix Technologies Inc., an Acentury subsidiary with a clear vision: to simplify and accelerate the RF filter design process. As wireless systems became more complex and industries like aerospace, defence, satellite communications, and autonomous vehicles pushed the boundaries of performance, traditional design methods were no longer enough.

So, we built something better: SynMatrix. This all-in-one software platform is designed specifically for RF filter designers and manufacturing technicians. With software automation, AI algorithms, and seamless third-party integrations, it delivers a smarter, faster path from concept to production.. helping users meet modern demands while staying ahead of the curve.

A full-circle moment.

Along with the technical side of my job, my story continues. Several years ago, a local school board approached us about supporting a new program for immigrant students. We weren’t sure how much of a difference we could make, but I remembered the kindness I was shown when I first arrived in Canada and felt compelled to give back, so we said yes. Today, we’re proud to continue supporting the program, and to our delight, several exceptional individuals - graduates of that very initiative -have joined our team full-time.

The generosity I’ve received throughout my journey and the determination I gained from my childhood have shaped how I lead today. I believe in paying it forward–through mentorship, entrepreneurship, and helping others take their first steps in a new life.

Looking back, I’d tell my younger self: “Dream bigger. Start sooner. And never hesitate.”

From the fall of a telecom titan to the rise of two thriving tech ventures, my journey is a testament to what’s possible when innovation meets purpose. With 6G on the horizon and networks becoming smarter and more adaptive, I’m excited about what’s coming next.
