Finding and developing talent at Acentury is a key company priority as we embark on a journey of continuous innovation. At Acentury we are always on the lookout for students who are passionate and driven so we can help them thrive in the tech industry and excel in their careers. In recent years we’ve offered several internships in different engineering and marketing disciplines. This year is no different.

Stuart Logan is a third-year Mechatronics and Robotics Engineering student from Queen’s University in Kingston, ON. He started a 4-month summer internship at Acentury, joining our LAMTA team and tasked with working on a technical problem seen often in RF labs: cell phones in a small RF chamber needed a mechanism to help physically orient them under test. It was also important to develop a feature to help power cycle them without having to be physically present.

Going the Extra Mile
After assessing the problem in Stuart’s first week, he believed that a 3D printer would be crucial to bringing his ideas to life. When he shared this requirement with our LAMTA team, we immediately inquired about the specific model and necessary tools he needed to achieve his vision and excel in his role.

Bringing Stuart’s Idea to Life with LAMTA
The key objective was to enable seamless rotation of phones in any orientation while also providing the ability to power cycle them physically. To overcome size restrictions and avoid interference with the phone's functionality, Stuart engineered a unique solution. The 3D printer played a pivotal role in fabricating custom parts, allowing for multiple iterations and ensuring optimal outcomes. By having the 3D printer in-house, we avoided outsourcing costs and helped accelerate development of the prototype sample. The ability to iterate quickly over the past two months has been crucial in achieving the desired results.

The Acentury innovation culture is a fast-paced environment that thrives on the people that support it. Success can only be achieved if everyone is treated as a valued team member, and a supporting environment is provided so that employees can thrive and develop.

Within his first week, Stuart was able to suggest and execute an idea that was fully supported by the management team at Acentury. He is well on track to developing a working prototype before the end of his term and we are excited to see what happens next.
